Part man, part machine, all cop.
RoboCop is a 1987 science-fiction thriller set in a violent, near-future Detroit where the police force has been handed over to private interests. After street officer Alex Murphy is badly wounded, he is rebuilt as a cyborg lawman and sent back onto the city’s crime-ridden streets. As he begins to recover fragments of his former identity, he also starts to see the corruption around him more clearly. The result is a story of a man turned into a machine who slowly pushes back against the system that made him.

Paul Verhoeven directs with a hard-edged, satirical style that keeps the action sharp and the violence unsettling. Peter Weller plays Alex Murphy, whose transformation into RoboCop gives the film its emotional core. Nancy Allen appears as Officer Lewis, Murphy’s police partner, while Ronny Cox and Kurtwood Smith are central to the corporate and criminal forces that shape his fate. Their roles help drive the clash between the city’s public duty and private greed.

The film is grounded in a bleak Detroit shaped by crime, corporate power and urban decay, giving it a distinctly cyberpunk atmosphere. Its tone mixes brutal action with dark humor and unease, while the cyborg premise raises questions about identity, control and what remains human inside a manufactured body. Even at 102 minutes, it feels tense and relentless, with a cold futuristic edge.
