Killer looks.
In 1980s New York, a polished investment banker moves through an elite world of restaurants, status symbols and office routines while keeping his private life carefully concealed. As his behavior grows more erratic, the line between social performance and violent impulse becomes harder to read. The film follows his descent into a personal nightmare shaped by vanity, control and obsession.

Mary Harron directs this crime drama with thriller and darkly comic edges, adapting the story for the screen with a sharp eye for surfaces and self-invention. Christian Bale plays the banker at the center of the film, while the people around him include colleagues and acquaintances who never quite see past his immaculate presentation. Their interactions give the story its tension, as ordinary professional exchanges take on a colder, more unsettling charge.

Made in Canada and the United States, the film uses the city’s corporate interiors and nightlife to create a sleek but hostile atmosphere. Its tone mixes satire with psychological unease, turning luxury and ambition into sources of dread. The setting gives the story a clipped, artificial quality that keeps the character study detached even when it becomes increasingly intense.
