Life, liberty, and the pursuit of vengeance.
Set in the antebellum American South, Django Unchained follows a freed slave who joins forces with an unlikely ally and heads toward a Mississippi plantation to try to free the woman he loves. The journey is driven by danger, hard bargains and the promise of revenge, and it moves from one tense encounter to the next as the pair close in on their target. What begins as a rescue mission becomes a violent confrontation with the power structure that holds the plantation together.

Quentin Tarantino directs the film, shaping it as a western with sharp dramatic tension and a strong sense of momentum. Jamie Foxx plays Django, whose determination gives the story its core, while Christoph Waltz appears as the German bounty hunter who helps him. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the plantation owner standing in their way, and Samuel L. Jackson is part of the world that surrounds that conflict. The cast gives the film its mix of menace, wit and urgency.

The film is set in the 1850s, when slavery and racial violence define everyday life in the South. Its tone is harsh and confrontational, but it also carries the brisk rhythm and stylized energy of a revenge western. Much of the drama comes from the imbalance of power between the plantation and those trying to challenge it.
