Time is the enemy.
Set during the First World War, 1917 follows two young British soldiers sent across enemy ground with a message that could prevent a disastrous attack. Their journey pushes them through a landscape shaped by shellfire, danger and constant urgency. The mission is simple to state and hard to survive, with every step carrying the weight of lives they may not be able to save.

Sam Mendes directs the film, shaping the story around the two soldiers at the center of the mission. George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman play the men forced to move through hostile territory, while the supporting cast includes Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch. Their roles bring moments of command, resistance and strain into a journey driven by duty and speed.

Made in the United Kingdom, the United States, India and Spain, the film uses its wartime setting to create a tense, immediate atmosphere. It is a war drama with thriller and action elements, focused on endurance under pressure rather than battlefield spectacle alone. The tone is grim and urgent, with the story unfolding as a race against time in the trenches and beyond.
