In Ireland’s darkest hour vengeance shines a light
Set in Ireland during the Great Famine, Black '47 follows Feeney, an Irish Ranger who comes home after years away and finds a country stripped by hunger and loss. What begins as a return to family becomes a journey through a land where survival has turned brutal and hope is hard to find. As he moves across the country, the film tracks his confrontation with the forces that have hollowed out his world.

Lance Daly directs this 2018 film, shaping the story around Feeney’s ordeal and the people he encounters along the way. Hugo Weaving leads the cast as Feeney, with James Frecheville, Stephen Rea and Freddie Fox among the performers who appear in the story’s orbit. Their roles help ground the film’s movement between personal grief and wider conflict.

The film is made in a bleak historical register, with the landscape itself carrying much of its weight. Its tone is severe and mournful, but it also has the force of a revenge tale set against national catastrophe. The result is a western-tinged drama that treats famine, violence and endurance as inseparable parts of the same world.
